CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

Going Back

It wouldn’t be until Lynn was already watching the city pass by outside a rattling train window that she found her answers. Two of them, in fact, yet neither which she particularly looked forward to. As it was, they lay rooted in the places that shunned her presence the most, after all.

With afternoon having turned towards evening, the last lessons of the day already over, the schoolyard remained mostly empty as Lynn made her way towards the dispiriting main building. Only a few stray pupils lingered beneath the darkening skies and none of which she knew by name, even as a couple of girls called out in familiar greetings: “Hey, Stinky, where are you headed? Did you forget to wind up the old alarm-bell last night, or what’s up?”

Nothing Lynn found the need to answer to. Her goal did not lay in petty squabbles, but a homeroom teacher she was not looking forward to meeting. And so, she continued forward, dreading what was to come.

Despite an hour where the hallways of the school remained all but desolate, however, it wouldn’t be until Lynn had already circled the teachers’ office twice, passed by the cafeteria, and then scoured most of the first floor that she finally found Mr Callem.

Not that Lynn paid her much attention either way. Hers was a different battle, and it begun with preventing Mr Callem’s stiff glare from setting the mood for their encounter.

“Mr Callem, I would like to talk with you,” Lynn said, her voice just loud enough to pull the attention from another few stray students lingering within the school, loud enough to prevent Mr Callem from simply brushing past her as he’d seemingly intended.

“About what?” he groused, his eyes having once glanced down at his wristwatch, across the hallway, and then towards a schoolyard outside. Never quite at Lynn, however, even as she stood just before him.

“About my last year of high school and university.”

“University? University?” Mr Callem repeated, as if to make sure he’d tasted the word right. His expression turned sour. Sourer. “You wouldn’t mean that you, accepted here because of your supposed studious brilliance and responsibility yet with grades barely above average, with an attitude only outweighed by your atrocious attendance, and with a manner and appearance that should never have allowed you past the lower districts, would be hoping for university? The audacity.”

Having drawn even more glances, Mr Callem was forced to restrain his voice as he continued. “And let me guess, you,
